Technical Challenges
As our services grow in scale, so do the expectations for quality, speed, and reliability. Building and operating services at scale means tackling complex technical challenges that only emerge at scale. Explore some of the key engineering challenges our teams are taking on across different technical domains.

Turning Data into a Strategic Asset
LY Corporation manages hundreds of petabytes of behavioral and content data generated across more than 100 services and a user base of over 100 million. Data Engineers and AI Engineers operate large-scale distributed platforms while ensuring that data is secure, accessible, and ready for use. By enabling analytics, recommendation systems, and AI-powered capabilities, they build the foundation that turns data into business value.
Enabling AI Agents in Production
Beyond real-time machine learning and large language models (LLMs), another key focus is building AI platforms that enable AI agents to be deployed in production services. This includes designing agent development platforms connected to internal data and APIs, memory platforms that understand user context, and governance platforms that ensure security, quality, and access control.
Our work goes beyond building platforms. We collaborate closely with product teams from problem definition through validation and continuous improvement, turning data and AI into real user experiences and business value. The opportunity to bring Data & AI into production is what makes this field so exciting.

Delivering Reliability for Everyday Use and Peak Demand
Product engineering at LY Corporation powers the services people rely on every day—from communication and shopping to search and content discovery. At the same time, our systems must be ready for moments when traffic surges dramatically, such as New Year's messaging, Cho PayPay Matsuri (Super PayPay Festival), natural disasters, major sporting events, and elections.
Maintaining reliability under these conditions requires far more than scaling infrastructure. Engineers combine demand forecasting based on historical data, capacity planning for servers and networks, API-level traffic control, dedicated data acquisition, intelligent data filtering, CDN caching, and static content delivery to ensure users receive the information and experiences they need, whenever they need them.
Evolving Existing Products While Creating New Experiences
Innovation at LY Corporation goes beyond building new features. We continuously evolve products that people rely on every day, balancing architectural constraints, operational requirements, and business priorities.
We are also building AI-powered experiences by integrating AI agents into production services. Going beyond simply presenting information, these experiences understand user intent and help users take the next best action.
Building products at scale means balancing reliability for both everyday and extraordinary moments while continuing to explore entirely new possibilities. The combination of scale, complexity, and innovation is what makes product engineering at LY Corporation so rewarding.

Building the Next Generation of Cloud Infrastructure with Flava
At LY Corporation, we develop and operate the technology foundation that powers our services end to end—from physical infrastructure such as data centers to our private cloud and developer platforms. We are currently integrating the large-scale infrastructure inherited from the former LINE Corporation and the former Yahoo Japan Corporation into our next-generation private cloud, Flava.
While continuing to support a wide range of services, we are redefining our cloud infrastructure for the future by balancing performance, reliability, and security at scale.
Building the Foundation for AI-Driven Services
As AI becomes an integral part of service development, evolving our technology foundation is essential to help engineers focus on creating value. Infrastructure engineering at LY Corporation goes beyond operating large-scale cloud platforms. It is an opportunity to build and continuously evolve the foundation that will power the next generation of AI-driven services.

Protecting the Business Through Organization-Wide Security
Security at LY Corporation goes beyond protecting individual products. We address risks across a diverse portfolio of products and services, including those of our group companies. From group companies and third-party vendors to infrastructure and global regulatory requirements, our security teams design and operate systems that strengthen confidentiality, availability, and integrity, guided by industry standards such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (NIST CSF).
Specialists across SOC/CSIRT, threat analysis, and security engineering work together to provide 24/7 monitoring while advancing log analysis, vulnerability assessments, and incident response.
We also develop and operate company-wide security platforms that support authentication and authorization, access control, certificate management, threat detection, and security analytics, leveraging both open source software (OSS) and commercial solutions where appropriate.
Securing the AI Era
As AI continues to transform both cyberattacks and cyber defense, we are advancing AI-powered vulnerability detection, monitoring, and security analytics while building secure execution environments through AI agent permission models, guardrails, and Zero Trust architecture.
By integrating technology, platforms, and governance, we build security that protects the trust of our users and supports the continued growth of our business. These are challenges that only a life platform like LY Corporation can take on.

Rethink What's Next
Advances in AI are rapidly changing how products are built and how software is developed. At LY Corporation, engineers explore emerging technologies, experiment with them, share what they learn, and apply those insights to real products and development practices. We foster an environment where engineers can continuously develop their skills and evolve the way they build.
AI Transformation (AX)
At TechVerse 2026, LY Corporation unveiled its AI strategy, where the CTO presented the company's AI Transformation (AX) initiative—an effort to transform both the development environment and the organization for the AI era.

Turning AI-First Development into Reality
At LY Corporation, we are transforming the very structure of how we work to become AI-ready.
Introduction
The Limits of Human-in-the-Loop and AI-Ready Workflow Design
Introducing AI improved review efficiency by up to 50×. However, a workflow built around mandatory human review still imposed limits on reducing overall processing time.
To overcome those limits, we are redesigning the workflow itself—redefining where AI can make decisions, clarifying responsibility boundaries, establishing decision criteria, and handling exceptions. This is how we are transforming our workflows to become AI-ready.

Turning Practical Knowledge into Repeatable AI-Driven Development
Orchestration Development Workshop(ODW)
AI-first development should not remain the practice of a few pioneering teams. At LY Corporation, we are building a framework that enables AI-first development to be adopted consistently across the organization.
Guild Members, a group of engineers selected by the CTO, bring together practical knowledge and real-world experience from across the company. Technical Directors (TDs) ensure alignment with our technology strategy while maintaining quality and consistency. Working closely with the Developer Relations Unit, they transform practical knowledge of AI-driven development into repeatable workflows and scale it across the organization.

A Culture of Learning and Sharing Practical Knowledge
At LY Corporation, engineers actively bring their own ideas to the table, organizing study sessions, meetups, lightning talks, and hands-on workshops on a regular basis.
Topics span a wide range of technical fields, including AI and data, mobile development, security, and product management. Professionals across the organization share technical insights, lessons learned, and the thinking behind key decisions from real projects, helping practical knowledge spread across teams and disciplines.
The culture goes beyond learning from others. Engineers are encouraged to share their own experiences and engage in discussions that build on one another's expertise. This continuous cycle of sharing and learning deepens individual expertise while raising the technical capabilities of the organization as a whole.
*218 internal technical events were held over the one-year period from June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026.
