Notice and Apology Regarding an Issue with the Data Disclosure Process to Taiwanese Law Enforcement

Privacy Announcements

We recently discovered that during the process of responding to a warrant submitted by Taiwanese law enforcement, information about disclosure targets different from those requested was mistakenly provided.

This incident occurred because the Taiwanese law enforcement agency corrected information regarding the disclosure targets, but we mistakenly disclosed information about the targets originally requested before the correction.

To correct this mistake, we first confirmed that the information in question remained within the control of the Taiwanese law enforcement agency and had not been accessed by anyone. We also confirmed that the information was not stored or obtained by the Taiwanese law enforcement agency, and then we destroyed the data. Accordingly, there is no risk of secondary damage.

Information Mistakenly Provided

  • Affected accounts:
    100 Taiwanese LINE user accounts
  • Affected information:
    A. LINE account registration information
Display name (username), profile image, ID used for friend search (LINE ID), phone number, email address, etc.

    B. Information related to chat history
Some unencrypted chat content*, date and time sent information, sender IP address, etc.

*This content includes cases where users have disabled end-to-end encryption (E2EE) themselves, as well as some content of group chats with 51 or more participants. In principle, LINE chat content is protected by E2EE and therefore is not subject to disclosure, even when a warrant is issued.

Date of Occurrence

December 1, 2025
(Information was mistakenly provided to Taiwanese law enforcement. On the day of the incident, we requested the retrieval of the data, and on the following day, the destruction of that data was promptly completed.)

We apologize for any inconvenience or concern caused to all the concerned parties.
We take this incident seriously and will thoroughly implement measures to prevent a recurrence, including reviewing and improving our operational workflows.
